III. Discussion of Policy Paper (2:20 – 2:50)
Several edits were discussed, as well as other strategies on what should be included or excluded from the paper. We decided that a next step on the paper is to have it designed and published in a more glossy format so that we can circulate it and gain support. IV. Mandatory Rental Housing Inspection Political Next Steps (2:50-3:25)
We discussed a meeting of the CEDA committee of the City Council who is meeting to discuss this issue on the 12th of April. The committee consists of Jean Quan, Jane Brunner, and Igancio De La Fuente. We believe this is the committee, but we can check online.
Some members think we should let the committee know that we are looking at this issue when they meet on the 12th. Catherine says that they have asked for a report from it from Chris Candell, but he will likely not give a favorable report.
Ignacio, the head of Oakland’s city council, did commit to supporting this initiative in November 2002 at St. Anthony’s, as Ann has written in the Tribune.
Other issues were discussed, such as partnerships and alliances that we should build on as we look for support. Another was the issue of Just Cause only applying to buildings with four or more units. Lisa should find what % of Oakland’s units that represents.
V. Next Steps & Next Meeting Date (April 20) (3:25)
1. Get in touch with Carlos Plazola to gauge Ignacio’s level of interest
2. Get habitability data from Sentinel
3. Go to CEDA committee meeting on 12th, maybe meet with Ron for prep
4. Jennie to call Vivian from APEN
5. Lisa to contact ACORN, Oakland Tenants Union
