Promotoras Discussion
- 16 promotoras from the Spanish pilot are graduating this week. The next step is to form the action plan, or what project/effort they will take on as a continuation of the training. There is an opportunity for the group to move into a Diabetes self-management training and to use Diabetes as the focus of their work as Promotoras. We discussed the issue of whether to encourage them to work on a specific health issue, such as Diabetes or nutrition/physical activity/childhood obesity or to let them take the direction they come up with, even if it is less “health” focused.
- Kristen described the next phase of work and the change in their thinking from looking into having an advisory group to instead having “train the trainer” workshops with other LSAC community-based organizations who can critique the training and take it back to their organizations and clients to share the model once it is adapted to suit them. The important question that Kristen is now grappling with is how to get these organizations motivated to participate in this training and to commit to spreading the model.
- Francell suggested researching who the State of California Promotoras Program Director is and seeking her out for advice.
LSAC Updates
- Representative for the Planning Committee
- Representative for Facilitation training
Next Steps
- Mara will work on recruiting people back into the health work group. Francell will check with the County about resources for health insurance enrollment programs. At the next meeting, we should discuss the interest we have in other projects, such as insurance enrollment.
