Promotoras Update

Kristen reported that they are in heavy recruitment for Promotoras now because they want to catch parents at the tail end of the school year and so that they can start the Spanish pilot program in the summer. There is a flyer that will come out soon (it will be posted on the list serve) for the information/orientation night that they are planning to hold during the first week of July at East Side Arts Alliance. The flyer is mainly to provide additional information for people who are already interested or being recruited.

Kristen also brought up the idea of having the health work group serve as an advisory group for the programs that will start in languages other than Spanish. They would probably also want to invite other people in to the group and spend some, not all, of the work group time devoted to this. Francell, Samantha and Mara supported the idea with the acknowledgement that it is best not to duplicate meetings and ask people to attend too many meetings; also, it may give people a reason to attend. The other invitees may include David or someone from EBAYC, Jenny or someone from Lao Family, Sean Kirkpatrick from APPS, and others. Send ideas to Kristen. Kristen is going to work on developing a structure for the advisory group, including the objectives, responsibilities of the group. Francell asked if the existing advisory group for the Fruitvale project could be used as a model for this one.

In terms of the non-Spanish speaking program, the tasks Kristen is considering include a selection of the target group, figuring out the best way to reach them, curriculum development, looking into other health promoter programs with the target population, and thinking through the cultural issues.
