NEXT MEETING:
Wednesday June 26, 2002, 2:00pm, EBAYCFOLLOW UP:
Jessica went to the Asian Health Services and La Clinica Health Fair. She had a discussion with the Policy Director of Asian Health Services and he told her that they have done a survey. We will get a copy of the survey. She thinks that it is very important that we get Asian Health Services and La Clinica to participate regularly in the Health Work Group.
Gianna: results of the “Listening Campaign”
Gianna began by setting up the framework for the learning campaign. The learning campaign helped bring parents into the surveying process. It was used to identify community action goals. It took one-year to get staff on board and trained.
The goal they set was to survey 500 parents, 1000 youth, and 200 teachers in one to one interviews, group interviews, and in telephone interviews. The surveying process required four full time staff for six months. A key concern of surveying the community is language. The survey functioned as an entry point for people into the collaborative.
Diana: report on conversation with Dr. Joseph Telfare
Dr. Telfair suggested that the group tap into local expertise for the design of the survey. He suggested that the group identify community folks to train and lead the survey process. He noted that they key to training is consistency.
Jessica report back from Walkers and Talkers regarding survey tool
Jessica had not had an opportunity to contact the New Orleans group.

Survey Tool Development
Rogeair Purnell
Rogeair came and gave a presentation on the Community Engagement Process, which was developed by Philiber Research.
In a project where they were working with a community on the issue of teen pregnancy they used the following framework:
They met with community members to involve them in the design of the survey.
They hired community members to map the community in order to identify people who live in houses. They also created household tracking logs. These people were trained in surveying. A connection was made with the beat police. They conducted two weeks straight of surveying and every person surveyed was paid a stipend.
This process was not an in depth analysis, but it helped community members to buy into the process and helped them identify specific areas of interest to work in. The results were very useful to local community based agencies. They also though that surveyors needed to be language and culturally appropriate and sensitive.
Rogeiar thought that that the screening of the person to be surveyed was the most useful. Setting the profile (age, birthday) of person made the survey fruitful and allowed the group to track other issues of interest.
The group thought it would be most useful if the survey was tight and focused. Community lead in questions can be the introduction to a health focused survey. The development of the survey and the process itself should last 4-6 months. The process can also link interviewing with referrals, in order to help community members deal with immediate needs.
