Follow-up on Enrollment Event in LSA
At the previous meeting the group had discussed attaching an enrollment event to an activity already planned at one of the neighborhood schools. The group discussed whether there were any events planned before the end of the school year. No one was aware of any. Giana offered to check the surveys done at Roosevelt at the beginning of the school year which tracked enrollment. They could provide some useful information. Giana also shared that the Roosevelt effort to enroll children in Healthy Families was not very successful, in part because there is a need for a lot of education because of fears about immigration status, legality, etc.
Community Health Survey
Francell reported that the County health department does not have a survey tool. She also looked at the Citizens Health Academy tool, but did not think it was appropriate because it was too broad. Juan suggested that other collaboratives in the county might have a survey. He will look into whether the Mayor’s Task Force on the Uninsured in Berkeley has a survey. There was a suggestion to conduct an internet search. Diane will contact Dr. Joseph Telfare at the University of Alabama. Jessica will find out whether Walkers and Talkers in New Orleans have a survey.
Ruben brought a copy of a health survey conducted in the Ashland neighborhood in San Leandro. They were surprised by the responses to the survey. Rather than identifying enrollment, clinics, or other health issues as priorities, the top priority to emerge from the surveys was neighborhood safety and crime issues.
This led to a discussion about whether we should focus the survey narrowly on health care access or more broadly. If the focus is broader, could it provide direction to the Collaborative?
There were a number of suggestions about how to proceed with a community survey:
Giana suggested that we should look at the results from EBAYC’s Listening Campaign We may want to consider doing focus groups on specific issues that were identified through the Listening Campaign or other surveys that have been conducted in the Lower San Antonio in the past.
Diana shared information about CalStat. If the health work group is convening parents of children with special needs about school-related issues, CalStat has money available for technical assistance. Through their family participation fund there is money for stipends, child care, and transportation. We should keep this in mind as a possible source of funding.
