III. Potential Health Work Group projects in the Lower San Antonio

After Carmen and Jessica gave a brief overview of the group and the impetus behind its convening, representatives from Lower San Antonio community-based organizations and new members of the group gave descriptions of their organizations and services.

La Clinica functions as a full service primary care office. They currently serve 5,000 people in the neighborhood.

The Roosevelt Health Center is a school based health center run by EBAYC. It currently serves only children and their parents in the school, but looks forward to the day when they will serve the entire neighborhood.

The Oakland Unified School District Healthy Children project is targeting enrollment in the schools. They have conducted a survey attempting to gauge community health issues. Joseph Smith noted that, in general, there is a low turn out to enrollment events.

The group then began to discuss the future projects of the health work group.

Joseph commented that this group should not duplicate efforts and should work on understanding what is already happening in and around the Lower San Antonio. Gianna agreed and thought the group should spend its energy developing a community survey.

Camila thought the group should focus on the schools in the Lower San Antonio and plug into existing efforts.

Diana suggested that the group use the enrollment campaign as a means to an end. The event should be an opportunity for the group to listen to community members and give them a bigger role in determining the direction of the work group. She believes this could be accomplished through a survey. Joseph agreed and thinks that this would give the work group a fuller picture.

Joseph also suggested that the group should consider developing a health insurance scholarship to help retain families in their insurance programs for a year.

The group took a closer look at conducting a community wide survey to better gauge and prioritize residents’ health concerns.

Gianna suggested that EBAYC could survey Franklin, Roosevelt, Garfield, and set up a booth at the Malcom X Jazz festival. Francell added that the group should consider distributing surveys through collaborative organizations and added that small focus groups could be organized to discuss the health concerns of residents.

Diana Lee suggested looking at train the trainer. Camila suggested that an incentive should be developed for people to complete the survey. Joseph noted that OUSD has an outreach specialist at each of the school sites and can be used to do some surveying. He could also get volunteers to survey at school sites.
