- Goal for today is to find the best wording on the HWG mission statement
Announcements
- Mapi announced that La Clinica is planning a Community Forum on Violence on June 18th at the San Antonio Church. It will be held in Spanish. Please send her ideas of groups to invite.
- Anna announced that Alameda Alliance has hired community outreach staff. She will send Mara contact info for the staff members.
- Brenda announced that they had received a grant to work on obesity prevention and diabetes. They’ll be doing the first convening of pediatric health care providers. The first planning meeting is June 16th. She’ll provide regular updates to the HWG.
Work Group-Work Plan Review
- Anna gave an overview of the Health Work Group’s history and strategic planning process.
- Mapi provided a review of the Community Outreach work group’s last meeting and work plan. Their outreach strategies include the cultural center, Malcolm X Jazz Festival, Neighborhood Grants project, the SA Unity Newspaper, MCMOI. There are many connections for the HWG.
- The group also suggested that the Joint Committee should bring back the idea of holding updates meetings for folks to hear what is going on in the community.
- Next month, the work group will focus on connections with the ECE work group. Francell has the role of updating the group on the work plan.
Mission Statement
- There was discussion about including or not including the factors language: social, socio-economic, political, environmental, educational and access. There was also discussion about whether or not the term “holistic” will mean “holistic health” to some people. Brenda added “…through collective community action” to the end of the statement. There was discussion about the term broad-based, coalition, community and neighborhood. Eventually, the group decided on the following:
“The Health Work Group is a coalition whose mission is to address the social, economic, environmental and educational factors that impact the health and well-being of San Antonio residents.”
- The group will develop a one-pager for handing out, which will include the mission statement the second section developed by Kristen, and ideas of ways for residents to get involved. The group will bring this one-pager to next month’s Joint Committee meeting, which is focused on the health work group.
- The group will continue to visit other work groups.
- Mara will update the LSAC website with this mission statement and other updated information.
Theory of Change
- Mapi, Anna (and Francell if she agrees) will help Deborah put together a template for the Theory of Change. Next month’s meeting will focus on this topic.
