I. Updates
- Eastside Arts Alliance met with the Deacon Council at Mt. Calvery Baptist Church about leasing their building on 23rd Avenue. ESAA was not optimistic about a lease arrangement. The Church is looking for partners that have a Christian orientation.
- The ProArts Gallery, currently located in Old Town in downtown Oakland, is losing its lease. They have spoken with Libby Schaaf about purchasing the building that is being put up for sale on 23rd Ave. behind the Bank of America building.
- ESAA held a jazz concert at YEP on April 3, which was very successful.
- YEP is getting ready to replace their windows. They received $5,000 from a Tobacco grant to do another mural.
- Jennie, who is the designated liaison with the SDS Team announced that there are no new developments to report.
- EBAYC is working with OCO to organize an accountability session with the police. It will take place on April 17th at 6:30pm at the St. Anthony’s cafeteria. There will be a planning session on Wednesday, April 9th at 6:00pm at St. Anthony’s.
- The newspaper committee needs help with distribution.
II. EBAYC / SACDC Report
SACDC
- They received a contract from the Casey Foundation for the merchant organizer.
- They have hired Pat Constantine for the merchant organizer position. They are also getting 2 workers from the Social Service Administration workforce development program—they hope to get a Spanish speaker and a Vietnamese speaker.
EBAYC
- The organizers are focusing on the April 20th Earth Day clean-up. On April 15th or 16th, they will do a door-to-door outreach effort, which will involve a survey asking people what they’d like to see happening in the corridor, handing out a flyer, and inviting parents to join the Garfield Parents Council. On April 17th, they will hand out flyers to parents when they pick up their children. They will also announce the event at the OCO accountability session.
- Safety will be the main issue at this month’s Garfield parent organizing meeting. The parent group has set-up a meeting with the Principal. The organizers are passing around a petition to install speed bumps around the school.
Don raised the issue about the timing conflict between the Garfield Parent Council meeting and the LSA Collaborative meeting. If parents were to come to the Collaborative meeting, there would have to be translation and the issue would have to be relevant to them.
III. Meeting with Councilman De La Fuente on PAC Appointees
Ignacio has agreed to meet with representatives from the Collaborative to discuss his CBO appointees. The meeting will be on April 18th at 10:00am. Eric, Jennie, and Isabel will attend the meeting. Their approach will be to hear what Ignacio is thinking in terms of appointees and to encourage him to appoint Collaborative members.
IV. Earth Day Celebration
Chris will try to get one Team Oakland group to help with the clean-up. He needs a formal request from EBAYC that he can pass on to the City Manager. EBAYC will invite to attend a community dialogue after the clean-up. They will also invite SDS Team members.
V. Urban Ecology and Scenario Planning Follow-up Discussion
The group was generally positive about Urban Ecology’s presentation. They would like more information in order to make a decision about whether to go ahead with a participatory land use planning process in the 23rd Ave. Corridor. The group felt that they needed to be very deliberate about entering into a partnership with Urban Ecology and they wanted to make sure that the relationship with the 23rd Ave. work group was clearly defined. Jessica will set-up a follow-up meeting with Urban Ecology. The following members of the work group would like to attend: Chris Thomas, Greg Morazumi, Hari Peramal, and David Kakishiba.
